Jatayu is old. His wings are slow compared to Ravana's power. He sees Sita being taken and does the only thing worth doing. He fights. Not because he believes he will win. Because the alternative is to watch and do nothing, and that is not a choice he will make. He falls. His wings are broken. But when Rama finds him, Jatayu dies with the knowledge of where Sita was taken. His last breath carries the answer. Defeat, completely and irreversibly, and yet the most important act in the whole war. The tee renders him in free fall, wings spread, the slash of red across his chest: a wound and a declaration at once.
